Archbishop of Australia Makarios joined Greek music fans at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on Saturday night, October 31, for the highly anticipated return of popular singer Nikos Oikonomopoulos.
The concert formed part of Oikonomopoulos’ anniversary tour, celebrating 20 years of his successful career in Greek music. His return to Sydney was particularly special for local fans, with the singer performing in the city for the first time in three years.
The Archbishop’s arrival came as a surprise to concertgoers, who welcomed him with warm applause and expressions of affection and respect.
Oikonomopoulos is also known for his strong Christian Orthodox faith, making the meeting with Archbishop Makarios a meaningful moment during the evening.
The two met and spoke warmly, with Archbishop Makarios congratulating the singer on reaching the milestone of 20 years in the music industry. He also wished him good health, strength and continued success in his career.
During their conversation, Archbishop Makarios highlighted the important role Greek artists play in maintaining the cultural connections between Greece and its diaspora.
He noted that visits by popular Greek performers give Australian Greeks an opportunity to reconnect with contemporary music and culture from their homeland, while allowing younger generations to experience the sounds and traditions of modern Greece.
Saturday’s concert was a major occasion for Sydney’s Greek community, which enthusiastically welcomed one of Greece’s most recognised contemporary performers.
For many in the audience, the night was about more than music. It was an opportunity to celebrate Greek identity, cultural connection and the enduring relationship between the diaspora and Greece.
