MELBOURNE, VIC — There’s nothing like the thrill of knowing an exciting new opening is on the horizon, and that is exactly the buzz surrounding Helios Hotel. Don’t let the name fool you—while the newly unveiled venue sounds like a classic Australian watering hole, it is actually a massive, three-storey modern Greek restaurant capable of hosting up to 300 guests on Malvern’s vibrant Glenferrie Road.
The highly anticipated venue is the latest project from Chef Ioannis Kasidokostas and his wife and business partner, Maria Tsilfoglou. The duo previously won loyal fans with their Mediterranean restaurant Sowl in Carnegie, followed by widespread acclaim for their modern, refined Greek establishment, Aegli, in South Melbourne. Now comes Helios Hotel, a multi-level venue promising a fresh look at contemporary Greek cuisine, drinks, and hospitality.
Not a Pub, a Gathering Place
The choice of name is a deliberate nod to European hospitality rather than local pub culture.
“We didn’t call it a ‘hotel’ because we want it to be casual, but because we want people to feel that this is a gathering place,” says Chef Kasidokostas of the multi-level newcomer.
Spread across three floors, the venue is designed to feel open and welcoming, moving away from rigid fine dining while retaining high culinary standards.
Familiar Flavours, New Rules
While the menu features quintessential Greek staples like succulent lamb shoulder and hand-rolled dolmades, the culinary team promises plenty of surprises. The kitchen follows its own rules, blending deeply traditional Mediterranean roots with modern techniques and local Australian produce.
